Ever wanted to spellcheck or otherwise process text selected in an application that does not directly support what you're trying to do? CMScript may be able to help you.
If you're not familiar with Word Services, the best thing you can do to find out about them is paying a visit to <http://www.wordservices.org>. There's also a list of applications that support the Word Services Protocol.
Know Shortcomings & Unresolved Issues
CMScript needs to do some wizardry to sneak into applications.
- In principle it can only work in applications that support AppleScript reasonably well. If you find an application that does have decent AppleScript support, but where CMScript doesn't work at all, please contact me.
- It won't work with some Word Services "servers", i.e. applications that supply a service like spellchecking. In these cases the server will complain with an error message or check the selected text, but when it comes to write back the changes to the selection they will get messed up. I know what is happening and why. In fact, this is caused by those servers being rather smart. Unfortunately it doesn't work out in conjunction with CMScript. Sorry, I don't know of anything I can do about that.
Cool things to do with this plugin
If you're fond of writing scripts in Perl you'll probably already have MacPerl. I've written a MacPerl Extension that allows you to save Perl scripts as Word Services Servers that are usable from applications that act as Word Services "clients" and with this plugin in particular.
Why did you absorb the original Word Services plugin into CMScript?
Well, I hope it's not another case of bloatware. I wanted to add a lot of the features that CMScript already had into Word Services CM. This would have increased its size considerably and memory consumption would have gone up, too. On the other hand, integrating Word Services into CMScript proofed to cause a very low increase in size.
